USC honors first African American athletes

Casey Manning Casey Manning
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

It was a very special night at the Colonial Life Arena Friday.

The University of South Carolina honored some pioneers of the athletics department, the school's first black athletes.

Carolina welcomed its first black athletes in 1969, six years after the school was integrated.

"It's a wonderful thing," said Casey Manning, USC's first African American basketball player. "You're honored. It's not just for me or Jackie Brown who is not with us any longer and I miss Jackie Brown or Carlton Haywood, but it's for all the students that were here back during the days we were in school and it's not just an individual honor, it's a collective thing, it's for the community, it's for all the students and for the greater Columbia area and the whole state.

Athletes who played from 1969 to 1979 were recognized.
