CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

One person has died and another seriously injured in an accident in northeast Charlotte.

The accident happened Thursday around 3 p.m. on East WT Harris Boulevard near University City Ridge Drive.

Police say Ezzard Jones, 61, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck northwest on WT Harris Boulevard  when he crossed the grassy median into oncoming traffic.

Jones' truck then collided with a Dodge Avenger that was heading southeast.

Jones was pronounced deceased on the scene by MEDIC. The 28-year-old driver of the Dodge Avenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. As of 10 p.m. he was listed as being in stable condition.

Witnesses told police that Jones was driving erratically for several miles before the crash.

Police say that alcohol use and/or a medical condition appear to be the main contributing factor in this crash.

East WT Harris Boulevard was closed around University City Ridge Drive while crews worked the scene. The road was reopened around 7 p.m.

Officials have not released a possible cause for the accident.
