WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – Republican Brenden Jones, who resigned last month as chair of the Columbus County board of elections, has filed paperwork for a run against first-term representative Ken Waddell (D), whose district includes Columbus and parts of Bladen and Robeson counties.

"Brenden Jones for NC House" submitted a "statement of organization" form to the state board of elections Sept. 19. Russell Wright of Tabor City is listed as campaign treasurer.

"It's something that I'm seriously looking at at this time, and a formal announcement regarding my plans and my decisions will be forthcoming," Jones said in a voicemail.

Jones is a member of the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center board of directors. According to a bio on the Rural Center website, he is a small business owner and native of Tabor City. He serves as a member of the Tabor City Committee of 100.

"I think I've been as effective as anybody could be, Republican or Democrat in this kind of climate," Waddell said Tuesday. "In my opinion, it's more about the urban areas than the rural areas regardless of your party affiliation."

When asked about Jones resigning from the board of elections less than two weeks before the recent election, Waddell said, "I think it was pretty bad timing when people had put confidence in him as board of elections member, and he was chairman."
