WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) – A man was discovered lying in the street early Friday morning with an apparent gunshot wound.

According to officials with the Whiteville Police Department, Demetric Piggott, 37, is still alive despite having been shot in the chest. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, then transferred to Pitt Memorial hospital.

Authorities were called to the area for reports of a suspicious person walking around the Burkhead Apartment Complex, which is commonly known as Cook Apartments.

Officers spotted Piggott lying on the ground when they arrived. Police said Piggott explained he was a shot by a man he didn't recognize who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Investigators said there were no reports of shots fired in the area. Some residents were shocked when they learned Piggott had been shot because they were sure they would have heard the gunshots.

Police are exploring if someone shot Piggott elsewhere and then may have left him on Burkhead Street, though those theories are not confirmed.

"Because of him being a mentally ill person we haven't been able to get anything from him. He was also unconscious at one of the interviews we tried to have with him. We're still waiting on him to be treated and once he is, we'll try to interview him some more and see if we can get more information on who possible is our suspect," said Chief Marc McGee, with the Whiteville Police Department.

Officers were called to the same apartment complex last month in response to reports of shots fired. Police had to use Tasers and call four other law enforcement agencies to break up a large fight that ensued.
