WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Three people have been charged in connection to a break-in and attempted robbery incident that ended with an officer involved shooting.
According to the Wilmington Police Department, Jhahie Dunham Mitchell, 20, Derrick Anthony Hayes, 19, and Gerrod Rashon Hughes, 19, were all charged with:
• conspiracy robbery with a dangerous weapon• attempted 1st degree burglary• (2 cts) assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer
A spokesperson for the WPD said officers were called to respond to reports of a breaking and entering on Lamp Post Circle around 7:00 Wednesday night.
Anthony Bernard Brown, 40, told officials three men kicked in his back door and pointed a gun at him.
Brown went on to explain the three men, ran away from his apartment and into a nearby wooded area behind the building. The suspects then came back around the apartment complex and got into a car.
After searching the area, officers spotted the accused suspects sitting in a gold Cadillac parked off Lullwater Dr.
According to police, officers went to the vehicle and told the suspects to show their hands. The three men refused, and the driver accelerated and charged at the officers with the car.
That's when two officers fired several shots at the Cadillac and hit one of the men in the leg with a bullet.
The two officers who fired their weapons are on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure. The SBI and District Attorney Ben David responded to the scene, as well.
Brown, the victim of the break-in, was also charged as a result of this incident in connection to drugs. Police found narcotics when they did a search of his home.
Brown was charged with:
• possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule IV• felony possession of marijuana• maintaining a dwelling• possession with intent to sell & deliver within 1,000 feet of a daycare
