BURGAW, NC (WECT) – The longtime mayor of Burgaw lost his race for re-election Tuesday night.

Newcomer Eugene Mulligan grabbed 230 votes or 55% support compared to Pete Cowan's 187 votes.

Cowan had been the mayor for about the past ten years in Burgaw. Cowan had initially indicated he would not run for the office again, but decided to try to stick around to take care of some "unfinished business," including a local walking trail.

Mulligan has proposed making the town of Burgaw more attractive to small business.
