WILMGINGTON, NC (WECT)- Wilmington City Council is putting a hold on their efforts to ban gang members from parks.
According to Bill Saffo, Wilmington's Mayor, the council will wait until the Wilmington Police Department has its new gang task force unit in place before considering the ordinance again.
"It does us no good to pass laws that we cannot enforce, so the chief has got to take a look at that, and that's why we're going to wait for his recommendations to come back to us as to what he would like to see us do, not do, change within the ordinance we're talking about," said Saffo.
The idea behind the ordinance would prevent any registered gang member from setting foot in a public park.
Saffo said he does not know when the ordinance will be a topic of discussion again.
