MEXICO CITY (CCTV/CNN) - Mexicans go to the graveyards, to reconnect with their dearly departed on Friday and Saturday, known as the Days of the Dead, and the festival also promotes the sales of the traditional flower -- Cempazuchitl.
The special, bright yellow marigold is always part of the commemoration for this traditional national holiday which dates back to pre-Hispanic times.
In Mexico City's most tradition neighborhood, Coyoacan, this "ofrenda", or offering, is dedicated to some of the country's most well-known figures, including surrealist painter Frida Kahlo.
The Legendary revolutionary leader Pancho Villa is also revered with special incense and candlelight. And a former president, who nationalized oil, is enshrined in Mexican marigolds.
At this time of each year, millions of Mexicans come to public markets and purchase tons of the flowers, known by its pre-Hispanic and indigenous name, Cempazuchitl.
Local residents use the flower to honor the dead, and some of them believe that its strong aroma attracts the spirits of the departed.
The industry's season lasts for a brief three months, from early August to the first two days of November, the Days of the Dead.
According to Mexico's Secretary of Agriculture, sales of the traditional flower, Cempazuchitl, have grown more than 30 percent over the last decade. The business brings in nearly $1.2 million a year.
The central Mexican state of Puebla leads the way, producing nearly 70 percent of each year's crop, which provides income for dozens of families.
"For us, it is a strong source of income during the year. But we do most of the work during one week. We call them our peak dates," said Rodolfo Juarez Cruz, a local producer.
For just a few days, truckloads of Cempanzuchitl flowers are taken to cities all across Mexico.
People remembering their dead know that this most Mexican holiday would not be complete without the bright, pungent flowers.
