NHC deputy fired, charged after discharging Taser at utility worker

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office was fired from the department Friday in response to his actions toward a utility technician.

According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Reed Roberts was at his home in Pender County waiting for someone to restore power to his house.

When the technician arrived and began reconnecting the electricity, he and Roberts began to fight.

According to the sheriff's office, Roberts discharged his Taser at the technician, violating sheriff's office policy.

"I continue to hold my Deputies to a higher standard, and I will not tolerate this type of behavior," said Sheriff Ed McMahon.

Roberts was charged with misdemeanor simple assault. He is expected in court December 10.
