BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Here's a story that will make you may want to think twice before leaving money in those fundraising jars that you can find on store counters.
We first reported on Wednesday that Stephanie Thomas and Jason Rollins, from Brunswick County, were arrested in Bolivia and are being charged with arson.
We learned on Thursday that some people tried to raise money for them after the fire.
The manager of the Walgreens store in Shallotte confirms they collected about $40 for the family.
He says the Thomas family told them a sad story and made them believe they were in need of food, clothing, and money.
When the collected money was handed over to the Thomas family, the manager of Walgreen's says the couple used the money to buy cigarettes from the same store.
The store has since removed the jar and will no longer accept donations for anyone.
The Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross normally sends notices when they help families. But in this case, they are citing privacy rules for not confirming or denying any help.
Meanwhile, the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office says this case is still under investigation.
