WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – News of an international wine shortage is not a worry for the crew at Wilmington Wine on Castle Street.

"I don't see wine consumers as being the freak-out type," said Zak Kilson, the Libation Logistics Coordinator.

A recent report from Morgan Stanley Research found that the wine industry is experiencing an undersupply of nearly 300 million cases a year, which isn't enough to keep up with current demand.

Kilson said wines from years past should be able to keep everyone's glass half full until the supply side can catch up to the demand.

"There's either going to be a ramp up in production, or we're going to overconsume," he said.

The latter option is not possible, according to Kilson. The report found that global production was down by 5% last year, but Kilson said it should not slow your sips.

"I think we need to ramp it up a bit," he said.

Talk of a shortage will lead to new producers filling the need for more wine, according to Kilson. With that belief in mind, he said there's no need to hoard cases of your favorite variety.

"Between Harris Teeter and Whole Foods and boutique shops, like ourselves at Wilmington Wine," said Kilson. "I think we're going to be just fine."
