Sheriff Joe Arpaio considering launching drone program

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is considering launching a drone program.

The idea is only in the testing phase right now but Arpaio is looking at buying two drones to patrol the skies over Tent City and MCSO jail facilities looking for contraband and food being thrown over the fence.

There's no official word on the cost but the sheriff is said to be looking at drones in the 15-to-$20,000 range. Eventually, CBS 5 News has learned, the drones could also help patrol desert areas looking for drug smugglers and in search-and-rescue operations.

So what do you think about this one? Go to the CBS 5 News Facebook page and tell us, "What do you think Sheriff Joe plans to use drones for?" We'll air some of your feedback tonight beginning at 5.
