WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Guiding Light Ministry was wrapping up their evening service around 11 P.M. Friday evening. Churchgoers lingered at the ministry until 11:15 said Larry Shaw of Wallace, NC. Less than a half-hour later, shots rang out across the street at the Pizza Hut on South 17th Street.
A shootout left the ministry building with a shattered front window and a bullet hole in one of the interior walls.
Shaw came out to the ministry Saturday afternoon to paint over the bullet hole and sweep up broken glass from the front window. He said he is thankful no one from his church was hurt in shooting.
"The church was pretty crowded last night," said Shaw. "It could've been a worse incident than what it was. Somehow or another, God allowed us to be out of place when the devil did his work."
Shaw said that the church will still hold its regular service on Sunday.
