Police say they've arrested a woman who watched as her boyfriend abused his 3-year-old son and told police she didn't like "getting into problems like that."
Leslie Hernandez lives with her boyfriend, Javier Jaime, who was arrested on multiple counts of child abuse during the boy's visit from Aug. 22 to Aug. 30.
Phoenix police said during that time there were multiple incidents of abuse. Authorities said Jaime allegedly beat the child unconscious in the bathtub of their home. The boy suffered serious head injuries and was hospitalized for nine days, police said.
Jaime admitted to beating the child with his hand and a belt over the course of three days, but claimed he "dropped" the boy in the tub.
Police said Hernandez saw severe injuries on the boy but did not notify anyone.
Hernandez told police she did not get help for the boy because "she thought that he was going back home to his mom the next day," and that the boy's mom "could do something," according to the probable cause statement.
Hernandez claimed she tried to protect the child by telling him "to be good" and telling Jaime "not to hit him."
She is facing charges of child abuse and hindering prosecution.
