BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Homebound seniors who receive Meals On Wheels each week, Monday through Friday, are in desperate need of pantry items to assist them with nourishment through the weekends when Meals On Wheels are not delivered.
For years, the Food Lion in Sunset Beach has provided leftover bread for homebound seniors in need. But recently, the Food Lion switched management and is no longer able to provide the same service.
Now, Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., (B.S.R.I.), is stepping in to help.
B.S.R.I. has recently realized this great need, and is implementing "Baskets of Love," where the Meals on Wheels volunteers will deliver each Friday, in addition to their regular meal, a basket of weekend nourishment to homebound seniors in need. BSRI Director Jim Fish says this program is built to save lives.
"We knew there was a need but we had no idea how big the need was," said Fish. "We have a significant amount of homebound seniors who can't get out and they count on food being delivered to door steps which otherwise wouldn't be there."
BSRI needs your support to help make this possible by participating in area events and fundraisers which will be scheduled for this purpose.
The kickoff for "Baskets of Love" takes place this weekend. Nearly one hundred people across Brunswick County will be recipients.
