Food Day Wilmington: "Time to eat real"

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The items you toss in your cart at the grocery store affect more people than you might think. Local farmers pushing to get their products in to North Carolina marketplaces is an everyday fight, as out of state, mass- production farms are tough competition.

Feast Down East and Community Partners have joined efforts to bring you FOOD DAY WILMINGTON on Thursday Oct. 24, 2013.

This FREE public event will take place throughout the course of the day on UNC Wilmington's campus, located at 601 S. College Rd. and at Tidal Creek Cooperative Market, 5329 Oleander Dr.

FOOD DAY is a nationwide celebration of and movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food, culminating in a day of action on October 24th every year. Created by the non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest, FOOD DAY aims to bring the world closer to a food system with "real food" that is produced with care for the environment, animals, and the men and women who grow, harvest, and serve it.

At 11 a.m., New Hanover County Commissioner, Woody White, and Wilmington City Council Member, Charlie Rivenbark, will initiate the day with proclamations designating Oct. 24 as FOOD DAY WILMINGTON.

A Sustainable Food Fair will be held at the UNCW Amphitheater from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will feature cooking demos, kale eating competitions, a photo booth, and much more.

Educational workshops focused on the unknown realities of the food we eat, food insecurity, and farmworker justice will run from 9:30 am until 3 pm, in UNCW's Long Leaf Pine Room.

UNCW Campus Dining's chefs will provide a locally-sourced lunch available for purchase at Dubs Café, located in the Warwick Center. The celebration will continue with a Wine-d Down event from 4-6 p.m. at Tidal Creek Cooperative Market. The day will end with the screening of "A Place at the Table" at UNCW's McNeil Hall Auditorium.

The public and UNCW students and staff are welcome to attend for a day of activities and workshops aimed at building awareness of and support for a healthy food environment.
