TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WECT) - The skyline of Topsail Beach looks a little different after crews took down the old water tower Wednesday.
In July, the town celebrated the completion of their multi-million dollar water project, which included a new water tower. Leaders say the $3.5 million project was talked about for years.
They say the project and new tower were necessary because the old tower wasn't going to last much longer. Crews started working at 5:30 a.m. to take down the old tower. They used blow torches to take apart the tower piece by piece.
The town manager says the project, which also included new water mains and a new meter reading systems, will be paid for by the town using funds from increased water rates, which went into effect in the spring. He expects it to be paid off in 20 years.
