Cavs disappointed in 2nd place District Preview finish

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Darton State golf team knew pulling out a win Tuesday at the District Four Preview was a long shot, but even their second place showing didn't leave head coach Dale Dover impressed.

Eastern Florida State's Drew Cooke shot a course tournament record 63 Monday to lead the Titans to a 16 shot lead over Darton State heading into Tuesday's final round.

Dover thought his Cavaliers would at least cut into that lead, but he was disappointed in what he got.

Tae Kim and Madison Turner shot a 69 and 70 respectively on Tuesday to lead the Cavs, but Taylor Martin, Jake O'Bryan, and Rafael Miranda all left more to be desired for Dover.

"I'm proud of [Kim and Turner] for holding us in there," Dover says. "The other three slipped a little bit."

The Cavaliers had hoped having home course advantage at Stonebridge would bring them their first win of the season.

They would not get their wish.

"I guess second's better than third, but it's still not a win," Dover says.

Dover says the Cavaliers must get more of a team effort if they want to be on top of the leaderboard.

"I felt like if we would've gotten somewhere around even par from the other guys, we'd have had a pretty good round today," Dover says. "But we need those other scores. You cant continue to shoot 76s and win golf tournaments."

The stage will be set for many of these teams and more again at Stonebridge in the spring for the District Championship Tournament.

Dover says even after being put behind the eight-ball by one big round, he can see a silver lining about returning to the course later this season.

"It's going to play different. This golf course gets hard and fast and that ball's bouncing and running on the greens and the greens firm up, it'll play differently," he says. "We won't see those kinds of scores in the spring."

It's a quick turnaround for the Cavs. They travel to Gulfport, Mississippi Monday for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Fall Invitational.
