LELAND, NC (WECT) – One restaurant owner in the area is taking matters into his own hands when it comes to keeping his business safe. Authorities with the Leland Police Department are investigating an armed robbery at a restaurant that happened Monday night.
Police say they received a call regarding a robbery at Shirley's Diner, located on Village Road.
The diner's owner, Bharat Jethawa, was leaving the business around 9 p.m. when he was confronted by two men wearing dark clothing and bandanas. One of the men showed a gun and demanded that Jethawa hand over his money.
"I didn't even realize what was happening until they tried to open my door," said Jethawa. "They said give me the money and I didn't know what was going on. I got scared and looked at them and said, 'I don't have any money.'"
At that moment, the suspects ran away.
Police, along with the sheriff's office K-9 Unit, searched for the suspects, but were unable to locate them.
Jethawa has a message for the crooks if they plan to come back.
"I hope they don't because they got a lesson," said Jethawa. "But if they do, I'll be ready."
Leland police told Jethawa that they plan to step up their patrols in the area. Meanwhile, Jethawa says he plans to install surveillance cameras inside and outside.
