UNCW Press Release

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia – Sophomore Katrina Guillou tallied a goal and an assist and freshman keeper Carolyn Huddy made seven saves for her second career shutout as UNCW knocked off league-leading William & Mary, 3-0, on Sunday at Albert-Daly Field.

The Seahawks evened their season mark at 8-8 and improved to 3-3 in league play as they picked up their first victory in program history against the Tribe. William & Mary moved to 8-2-4 and 5-1 as they suffered their first loss since its season-opening setback to Georgetown on Aug. 23.

"This was a tremendous team effort," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "We made some changes after our game at James Madison and they really seemed to give our team a spark today. To get our first win in program history against William & Mary is a great feeling. I know the team shares this victory with every player who came before them."

Guillou opened the scoring in the 17th minute, converting a penalty kick opportunity for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Sophomore Morgan Leyble doubled the Seahawks advantage at the 49:58 mark as she put home a corner kick from classmate Lindsey Byrne for her first goal of the campaign.

Freshman Moa Jarl closed out the scoring in the 89th when she knocked home a feed from Guillou for her first collegiate tally.

"William & Mary is a very well-coached team that is difficult to break down defensively, so to score the first goal early changed the complexion of the game," said Cairney. "Getting a second goal early in the second half really seemed to give us the lift we needed coming out of the break ."

William & Mary held an 18-15 shot advantage in the contest, out-shooting the Seahawks, 16-7, in the second half after UNCW posted an 8-2 margin in the opening frame. The Tribe was awarded seven of the eight corner kicks taken in the contest.

Huddy made seven saves for her second shutout in her last three starts. Sophomore Caroline Casey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tribe and finished with one save.

Both teams return to action Oct. 25. UNCW hosts Drexel while William & Mary travels to Hofstra. Start time for both contests are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
