COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - There have been four reported fatalities out of Columbus County since the beginning of October, which have some wondering if fatalities there are on the rise.
Last year, deputies said the county had the lowest number of fatal car crashes they've had to investigate in years.
According to the sheriff's office, there have been 90 more car crashes this year, compared to the same time last year. This year, there have been 13 fatalities, and this time last year, there were 11.
Deputies say they believe the county will still finish lower than it has in previous years.
Seatbelt usage is up more than 20 percent, and deputies say they credit their four-person traffic team, which works closely with highway patrol for the increase in people wearing seat-belts.
The sheriff's office traffic team normally patrols in the evenings and at night, when traffic is at its peak.
