UNCW Press Release
JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee – UNCW wrapped up its fall portion of the schedule with a ninth-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Blackthorn Club.
Freshman Trey Guy and senior Payne McLeod both finished tied for 23rd to pace the Seahawks.
"Today was one of those days where we just couldn't get going," said UNCW Head Coach Matt Clark. "Now we have some time to figure out where we need to improve and how we plan to get there. Overall, there were many positives from the fall season and I know we're already looking forward to the spring."
Fourteenth-ranked Virginia continued it tremendous run in round three, carding a 13-under-par score in round three to rally past 13th-ranked Virginia Tech to win by a stroke. Kent State, who is ranked 17th, finished two strokes off the pace while host East Tennessee finished fourth.
Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent, ranked fourth nationally by Golfstat, claimed medalist honors by two strokes over Thomas Birdsey of Wake Forest.
UNCW recorded 39 birdies for the tournament, raising its season total to 175 through four tournaments. The Seahawks are raising funds to help former UNCW standout Derek Brown and his family made upgrades to their house for the daughter, Kaitlyn, who has cerebral palsy.
"We've done well with the fundraiser and are thankful for the support received from other golfers, schools, conference and communities."
The Seahawks will be off from competition until Feb. 23, 2014, when they resume play at the John Hayt Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.
