WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A local woman was left with a bullet hole in her home after a spree of shots were fired Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Market Street and 15th Street.
According to Wilmington Police, nearly a dozen shell casings were found at the scene of the shooting.
Sophie Johnson lives at 1511 Market Street, the historic mansion district of Wilmington. On Saturday, a bullet flew through Johnson's window and into her wall. She said she was preparing a meal in the kitchen when she heard several shots.
"I had just put some chicken salad on the table with some crackers and cheese, and I look around to see maybe something had fallen," said Johnson. "A bullet came right through the house, went straight through the wall and lodged right beside the China closet."
She said that her neighborhood is not used to this kind of violence.
"We're shocked," said Johnson. "We're a nice little quiet neighborhood over here. We take care of each other."
Johnson said she is fed up with the recent rash of crime that has hit the Port City.
"The crime has got to stop in this city and we need to prosecute to the letter of the law because you shouldn't be afraid to walk in your front yard, or sit on your porch or sit in your dining room," said Johnson.
The Wilmington homeowner said she is looking to police to beef up law enforcement to stop the crime surge.
"If you need more law officers, go post-haste and get them," Johnson said. "Do whatever you need to do to rev up the heat on city council or whoever and get you the funds or the resources you need."
Johnson said police told her the shooting incident could be gang-related and that the suspects could be from the Creekwood neighborhood.
