NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Laney High School had a special homecoming Friday.

The student body elected John Rectenwald, a special needs student, to be their homecoming king with an overwhelming number of votes.  Rectenwald has severe scoliosis and is blind in one eye, but on Friday night, he was king.

The Laney senior said he did a jig when he found out at a school pep rally Friday that he had won the vote.

"As soon as I heard my name, I was just filled with excitement," said Rectenwald.

Rectenwald's mother, Karen Rectenwald, said she is very proud of not only her son, but the entire student body at the high school.

"I'm just so blessed an amazed at the support these students have given to John," she said.

Rectenwald said he was thankful for all of his friends that voted for him to be king.

"I will not let you down," said Rectenwald.  "I will be the best king this school's hoped to have."
