WILMINGTON, NC - (WECT) - Officers and clergy met for a second day on Friday in Wilmington as part of the Peacemakers United: Building Safer Communities Conference.
The conference brought in law enforcement officers from across the state along with clergy to talk about violence in neighborhoods and how to bring it down.
Members of Boots on the Ground were also at the conference, the group has been working all summer to make the Port City safer. Bishop James Utley Jr. Says he doesn't believe Thursday's deputy shooting is a setback, they believe it proves more than ever that more needs to be done.
"This is another incident but it doesn't dispel the progress that has been made, it just tells us that we have to do more in order to bring about the change," said Utley.
He said getting clergy and law enforcement involved is a good first step, but now the community needs to get involved.
