WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A suspect faces charges following a shooting involving a Wilmington Police officer that happened near Kmart Friday afternoon, according to a spokesperson for the police department.

Police say around 1:30 p.m., 48-year-old Warren Taylor Small approached an officer with a handgun. The officer told Small repeatedly to put down the gun, but he refused.

The officer fired a shot at Small, missing him, and Small was subsequently arrested.

During his arrest, officers found that the handgun was actually an unloaded pellet gun. Officers say he was also very intoxicated.

Small was charged with assault by pointing a gun, and going armed to the terror of the public.

The officer involved is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
