CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Detectives in Carolina Beach say they searched an alleged sweepstakes operation Wednesday in the Pleasure Island community and seized dozens of computers.

The search took place at Snows Cut Internet Center at Unit 66 at 1401 North Lake Park Boulevard. Detectives say the clerk, Theresa Ann Howard from Little River, South Carolina, was charged with electronic sweepstakes violations.  Charges are still pending against the owner, according to authorities.

Detectives collected forty desktop computers, cash and surveillance equipment.

Authorities say the business applied for a business permit with the town of Carolina Beach in July, but were turned down because it would violate the state's sweepstakes laws. They say the company started to operate without the permit.
