WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Former Whiteville Police Chief Jerry Britt was "separated from city employment" as of Thursday, Oct. 8.

According to City Manager Larry Faison, Britt has been reassigned as an assistant to the city manager due to a number of personal hardships that had prevented him from fully addressing the day to day requirements of staffing and operations of the police department.

Faison said those functions support providing for the public's safety, which requires the utmost sustained attention of the chief.

The city will begin the recruitment process for the position of chief of police.

Faison said Lt. McGee, who has 17 years of service with the city, will continue as the acting police chief, during the interim.
