Four charged in connection to break-ins

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Four people were charged early Wednesday morning in connection to a spree of break-ins in Wilmington, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

The arrests came after a traffic stop around 3:30 a.m. When officers searched the vehicle the suspects were in, they discovered a loaded gun, gloves, flashlights, iPods and cell phones.

Police believe the suspects are responsible for a series of car and residential break-ins within the past six months on the east end of Wilmington.

Jared Askel, 19, Jonathan Hayes, 21, Kedrian Tyson, 31, and Shannon Ortiz, 28, all face the following charges:

  • Breaking and entering auto
  • Larceny after breaking and entering
  • Conspiracy to commit breaking and entering
  • Possession of burglary tools
