The grand opening isn't until Saturday, but a new west Nashville business is not getting a warm welcome from some families. The concern is over what's inside the adult store called Pleasures Romance Boutique.
"People think it interrupts their family life and their quality of life in the neighborhood, so they tell me they don't want it," said Metro Councilman Jason Holleman.
Holleman says he has received at least eight complaints about the new business on White Bridge Road.
"For this store to stay in compliance and remain open in the neighborhood, less than a third of its sales will be adult materials. If it's more, it will have to close and move to the downtown area," Holleman said.
The folks at Pleasures say they are definitely not in the business to offend anyone. They have fountains outside and want to add an upscale atmosphere to a place they say sells basically what you can find at a mall or pharmacy.
On the shelves are lingerie, high heels, intimacy games, books and videos, which by law are not considered pornographic. But beyond the chandeliers is a wall full of sexual toys that might make some people blush.
"It's a high class, quality store - very nicely appointed inside. It has an educational focus and component, primarily," said Dr. David Yarian, a psychologist and sex therapist.
Yarian consults the store.
"I see countless people in my office who are struggling with how to reignite the passion in their marriage, so I am glad this store is in town," he said.
But whether the items are therapeutic or offensive will remain under a watchful eye.
"In Nashville, we have a sexually-oriented business board, and they have inspectors. And I will be asking those inspectors to go out and be sure that they are in compliance with the law," Holleman said.
