WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of students, parents and friends braved the damp conditions Wednesday morning and walked to Holly Tree Elementary School in Wilmington, one of many local schools celebrating "National Walk to School Day."

Carrying signs and orange balloons, some students and their parents walked while others rode their bicycles to a meeting place along Kirby Smith Drive.

The large group then moved to the track behind the elementary school, finishing with a snack of apples before the kids headed inside to begin their classes.

The idea of the national effort is to build awareness for several issues, including the benefits of exercise for children, and pedestrian safety for families who walk or bike to school.
