Investigators found Freeman's body at his home on Lilac Court in Wilmington.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Less than 12 hours after a neighbor found Angelo Freeman dead in his home, the victim's girlfriend is calling for the community to speak up about his death.
Lenore Benbow said she learned about Freeman's death at work Wednesday morning. Shocked and heartbroken, Benbow said she couldn't believe the man who was so good to her family was gone.
"It's hard for me and my boys," she said. "He got along really good with my boys."
Police said Freeman died from an apparent gunshot wound that happened between 9:30 and 10:00 Tuesday night. Benbow said whatever happened did not have to end that way.
"He was a good man," she said. "Whatever they wanted, he would have given it to him."
Wearing the dress Freeman gave her for her birthday, Benbow said she never expected the violence in Wilmington to become so personal. She said she's hopeful justice will be served, but pleads with anyone to speak up with information about the homicide.
"People are scared to talk," she said. "Somebody needs to start talking to stop this violence."
