WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A person was shot during an attempted armed robbery in the 800 block of Dawson St. in Wilmington Wednesday night.
Lieutenant Blanton with the Wilmington Police Department said a person was driving down Dawson Street then pulled over to the side of the road to talk with a family friend. According to the victim, a man came up to the car and demanded money.
The driver of the vehicle refused to give the man money, and that's when the suspect pulled a gun.
The driver still refused to give the man money, so the suspect "racked the weapon," effectively loading it, so the driver of the vehicle took off.
According to Blanton, the suspect shot the driver in his car as he was trying to get away. The bullet entered the man's left arm and exited his body through his right arm.
The man drove himself to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the suspect is a thin black man between 17 and 25 years of age, with dreads down to his shoulders. The suspect was wearing a black jacket and carrying a black handgun.
Authorities say this is still an active investigation and will release more details at a later time.
