WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 885, have been planning a trip to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. Friday, they continue on with that plan-- even if they have to push through the road blocks, literally.
The veterans have planned for three years to honor their fallen brothers and find some peace at the wall.
Monuments in Washington are under control of the National Park Service, which has been furloughed as part of the shutdown. This means tourists, including Chapter 885, can't visit the memorials.
However, organizers of the trip said they will push through the barricades in front of the wall. Also, Congressman Mike McIntyre is meeting the group in D.C. to aid them in their tours.
The Vietnam veterans raised more than $12,000 for their trip, and there are 55 people signed up to go.
