BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The fight over the Affordable Care Act is so intense, part of the federal government is actually shutting down, and it's affecting local government employees.
Currently, employees at the Sunny Point Military Terminal in Southport are still working and still getting paid. However, many of those workers are concerned about getting their next paycheck.
According to a spokesperson for Sunny Point, all government employees who work there except for two are still on payroll. But many employees are angry and worried because the longer the shutdown lasts, the more likely they are to eventually lose their jobs.
Several employees protested along Hwy. 133 outside Sunny Point's main gate on Tuesday. They brought signs and their loud voices, asking every driver to call their local congressman for answers.
A spokesperson for Sunny Point says the majority of workers at the terminal are part of the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. Therefore, their jobs are safe for now.
Employees like Sheril Brown are concerned about what the future may hold for their employment and right now, they're blaming congress.
"I don't know if I get paid on Thursday or the Thursday after that or when," said Brown. "So I really, really, really need some answers and need them to get off their butts and stop playing with my life."
A spokesperson from Sunny Point says there may be a point when some employees are furloughed. The only jobs that are completely safe are security, police, and fire.
