BURGAW, NC (WECT) - Walmart is planning to bring a new store to Burgaw, according to town officials in the Pender County community. Walmart is also trying to bring a grocery store to Surf City.

Burgaw Town Manager Chad McEwen tells WECT.com the national retailer submitted an application to the Burgaw planning board recently. The proposed location is inside city limits on Highway 53 behind the Pender Landing Shopping Center.

The retailer needs to get a conditional use permit to build on that land, which is required for any project over 7,000 square feet. Burgaw Planning Administrator Rebekah Costin says the board will complete a technical review over the next couple of weeks to see if the plan meets the county's land use plan and highway corridor study, among other requirements.

The planning board will meet October 17 at 6 p.m. in the town board room to consider the application.  If approved, it would go to the Board of Commissioners to hold a public hearing and make a decision.

Town officials in Surf City also confirm Walmart submitted plans to build at the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 210 behind the CVS.

The planning board has to approve the plans before the decision can even go before the town board.
