WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hear4NC is energizing families who are part of Homeowners Associations to take control of their HOAs.
During a meeting Monday night more than two dozen people listened to several horror stories of executive managers, outside consultants, and management contracts.
The members of Hear4NC emphasized the general rules and practices of HOAs, most importantly, the notion that homeowners are in charge of their own HOA.
Board members in private communities like HOAs have to act in good faith by state law, and Hear4NC is pushing two more bills to help homeowners.
Hearing all the problems, fellow HOA member Brian Agers spoke about his success story. Agers, a current member of Shell Island's board, compared the solution there to a rebellion.
Speaking of neighbors that feel they don't have a voice in the HOA Agers said, "They don't have enough opposition developed. They have not developed the rebellion I call it. They have to develop that. One or two people complaining is just a waste of time."
He said it took years and countless hours to rally enough neighbors to take charge and vote out officers who were not acting in good faith for the community.
The group Hear4NC says if you don't like how your board is managing your money, it's up to you and your neighbors to make a change.
