SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – United States Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) said Tuesday that he is closing down his Wilmington office in the wake of the federal government shutdown that began this morning.

Burr's other offices in Winston-Salem, Asheville, Gastonia and Rocky Mount are also affected. Constituent service operations are also suspended during this time.

Otherwise, WECT has gathered that a federal government shutdown will have a limited effect on residents of Southeastern North Carolina, at least in the short term.

Below is a partial list of potential impacts:

Laura Blair of the State Ports Authority doesn't anticipate an impact at the Port of Wilmington.

Congressman Mike McIntyre's office will remain open.

If Congress fails to enact a stop-gap spending measure, states would not receive quarterly payments for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Block Grant, according to the National Association of Counties. The New Hanover County Department of Social Services has contacted the state to see what local impact this could have, according to county spokeswoman Carey Disney Ricks.

UNCW students who receive federal financial aid and research that's underway probably won't be affected, according to Mark Lanier, assistant to the chancellor.

He added the university may see delays in payments for some existing grants and a shutdown of new granting activity.

"The longer the shutdown lasts, the more significant the impacts may be," Lanier wrote in a statement.

The Army Corps of Engineers, which has 261 civilian employees in Wilmington, says they'll be able to use "carryover funds" to pay employees through the end of the week.

Two or three employees who monitor lake levels and river flows would continue working after next week, according to spokeswoman Anne Johnson.

Moores Creek Battlefield in Pender County, which is part of the National Parks Service, would shut down starting Tuesday afternoon, said spokesman Josh Grubbs.
