UNCW Press Release
MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina – UNCW claimed it Colonial Athletic Association opener with a 1-0 win over conference newcomer College of Charleston on Saturday as Jack Ward's goal in the 48th minute proved to be the difference.
The Seahawks improved to 4-3-1 overall with their third road win of the season. CofC, meanwhile, dropped to 1-6 with their fifth consecutive loss.
"It's huge to get three points on the road in conference play," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "I thought we came out passive in the first half, but were able to raise our level of play immediately in the second half."
Ward scored just 2:50 into the second half on a beautiful setup from Jamie Dell. Dell took the ball to the endline and sent a cross from the leftside into the box. Colin Bonner let the ball roll through his legs and Ward knocked home his first goal of the season on the first touch.
For Ward, it was his fifth career goal and his second against the Cougars after also scoring in a 2-0 UNCW win last season.
"Jack (Ward) had an impact on the game from the moment he stepped onto the field. If we're looking to compete in the CAA, we need all of our players to be ready to step up. The league is strong and deep again this season."
UNCW totaled 11 shots on the evening while limiting the Cougars to five total and three on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Williams earned the win, making three saves and recording his second career shutout. In two starts, Williams has made eight saves, allowed one goal and owns a 0.45 goals against average.
The Seahawks next visit Duke for a 7 p.m. start on Oct. 1.
