Police: Springfield's 15th homicide of year appears gang related

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police are investigating the city's 15th homicide of the year, after they were called to the area of 28 Westminster St. shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday.

According to police, John Alexander, 22, of Springfield, was shot in the head while sitting in his gold Nissan Maxima. They said an older model silver Honda or Acura pulled up next to Alexander's vehicle, a male exited the car and fired into Alexander's car several times.

The suspect then fled in his car.

Alexander was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators said they recovered a handgun at the scene that allegedly belonged to Alexander, who had fallen out of his car and into the street.

Based on the investigation so far, police said the murder appears to be gang related.

Police Commissioner William Fitchet has ordered extra patrols to the Mason Square area, and officers will be paying special attention to where local gang activity is taking place.

The extra patrols will continue until further notice.
