WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Huffington Post article went viral associating CrossFit with a fatal injury called Rhabdomyolysis.
Rhabdomyolysis is an injury that can be caused from overexertion when working out. The muscle cells explode and ultimately cause kidney failure.
Trainers at Port City CrossFit say that the article is unfairly associates CrossFit with the injury. They encourage CrossFitters to increase their weight in small increments and never lift more than their body can handle.
Eric Rayburn is a physician's assistant who says he has only seen Rhabdomyolsis in older individuals who have fallen and their muscle tissue is broken down.
