RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – North Carolina's first lady, Ann McCrory, is joining the Safe American Foundation to say "Text First. Talk Second."
The campaign is designed to educate people on how to communicate with loved ones in the case of a catastrophic emergency. During and after emergencies, SMS text messages go through faster than mobile phone calls.
Mobile provider capacity can become overwhelmed after an emergency such as the Boston Marathon Bombing. In cases like this even emergency officials have difficulty communicating with each other.
According to the Safe America Foundation a single one-minute phone call takes up the same bandwidth as 800 SMS text messages.
"In today's environment, where emergencies seem to be always around the corner, it's critical for people to be prepared to stay in touch when phones lines are overtaxed. Texting is a good alternative to voice communications and is 800 times more likely to connect you. That's why we've made it such an important part of our Foundation's preparedness messaging," said Safe America President and CEO Len Pagano.
