WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – While the timing of the flu is unpredictable, the Center for Disease Control says flu activity can begin as early as October.

The New Hanover County Health Department will host a flu clinic at Wrightsville Beach Friday, September 27 to protect against the three main strains that could cause the most illness during the upcoming flu season.

According to the health department, anyone can receive a vaccination at the clinic. It is not required to be a resident in New Hanover County or Wrightsville Beach.

The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fran Russ Recreation Center located behind the Wrightsville Beach Town Hall on Russ Drive.

The health department will accept Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Tricare, Health Choice, cash, check and Visa/MasterCard. A picture ID is need with the insurance card or method of payment.

There are everyday preventive steps you can take in addition to getting vaccinated from the flu. Be sure to stay away from sick people and washing your hands frequently to prevent germs from spreading.

Also, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
