BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Bladen County Correctional Center is closing because of North Carolina state budget cuts. The inmate work release program is canceled and private contractor will take the place of the inmates.
The contractors will clean the streets, pick up leaves and tree branches around town and replace the job of the inmates.
The Public Service Director, Pat DeVane, says the department was working with as many as seven inmates a day. Patrick DeVane says it is a huge loss for the department and the cost will get passed on to homeowners.
Elizabethtown homeowners will pay about sixty dollars a year to use the contractor instead of the inmates.
The Public Service Department is asking the Department of Corrections to bus inmates from other prisons to Bladen County.
