While none of the local schools that we heard from ban books, they have received complaints.
Parents and community members have challenged three titles offered by the Brunswick County Schools since 2012: the Bone series by Jeff Smith, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and Are you there God? It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume.
A Brunswick County Schools spokeswoman say a committee at each school reviews challenges for merit and educational purpose.
Pemberton at UNCW says whether it's websites, t.v. shows, or books, parents should determine what's right for their kids.
"Anything that a parent is concerned about, it's their job to step in and talk to their child and make that decision. It's not the decision of the school system or the libraries," she said.
We've searched to see if local libraries carry the books on the American Library Association's Ten Most Challenged Books of 2012 list.
One of those books, as you might imagine, is Fifty Shades of Grey.
Every county public library system and college library carries the book, except for one - Brunswick Community College. They declined an opportunity to comment. None of the public school systems that responded to our information request have the book.
