UNCW takes down Francis Marion 3-1

UNCW Press Release

FLORENCE, South Carolina – UNCW scored three times in the first half to cruise to a 3-1 victory over Francis Marion in collegiate women's soccer action Sunday at Hartzler Field.

The Seahawks picked up their fourth straight victory and fifth win in six games as they closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 5-5-0 record. The Patriots, meanwhile, remained winless on the season as they slipped to 0-7.

"This was a tough battle today," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "This was Francis Marion's home opener and they were ready. We scored some great goals and it was satisfying for Lauren (Nalevaiko) to score her first goal. We also had the chance to play a lot of players. Our only focus now is to prepare our young team to get ready for reigning CAA champion Hofstra on Friday."

Junior Stephanie Bronson opened the scoring at the 20:45 mark as she found the back of the net from 15 yards out for her fourth goal of the season. Sophomore

Katrina Guillou was credited with an assist on the play.

Guillou doubled the Seahawks advantage to 2-0 just 44 seconds after Bronson's strike when she tapped in a feed from sophomore Maddie McCormick for her fourth goal of the season.

Freshman Lauren Nalevaiko notched her first collegiate tally at the 40:16 mark, heading home sophomore Lindsey Byrne's corner kick along the back post to expand the Seahawks advantage to 3-0.

Freshman Caroline Edmonds would get the Patriots on the board in the 78th minute, putting home a loose ball inside the box to make it a 3-1 contest. Freshman Kelly Anthony was credited with an assist on the play.

UNCW held a 14-8 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 9-3 margin in the first half. The Seahawks also attempted eight of the 12 corner kicks awarded.

Freshman Lissa Rahkola got the start in goal for the Seahawks and made one save before being replaced by fellow freshman Caroline Huddy in the 77th minute. Huddy played the final 14 minutes and finished with one save. Sophomore Taylor O'Berry played all 90 minutes in goal for the Patriots and recorded seven saves.

Both teams are back in action on Friday. UNCW opens Colonial Athletic Association play at Hofstra while Francis Marion travels to Wofford. Start time for both contests is scheduled for 7 p.m.
