WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Wilmington Police confirmed 18-year-old Joseph David Williams is dead after being shot in the back by a car trailing him in the Forest Hills area. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to investigating officers, Williams and Mark Richie Jr. were riding a moped Saturday when they were shot at several times by passengers in a car following from behind.

Forest Hills Dr. was blocked from Market St. to Guilford Ave. while police investigated. Police are looking for a gray Honda Coupe with tinted windows.

Social media activity posted by Williams' friends and family implies he had ties to a gang and was trying to get out.  According to New Hanover County court documents, Williams was arrested on July 6 for possession of three oxycodone pills.  He was held on $500,000 bond.  In August, Williams accepted a plea deal and was released from jail, but placed on probation.
