WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Five Marines are charged with attacking two brothers on September 16 in the parking lot of Sweet and Savory off Eastwood Road.
Nick Kaiser, 19, and his friend said they went to pick up Nick's brother Brandon, 25, at a nearby bar. Brandon wanted to get something out of his car, which was parked at Sweet and Savory, but he stopped when he saw a group of people. As the restaurant's manager, he says he wanted to know what they were doing.
"I asked them how's it going, what's going on, that's when they started getting aggressive," said Brandon.
Nick says he and his friend rushed over to see if Brandon was okay. They say the attack started soon after.
"Out of nowhere one of them was like, we aren't trying to start anything but do you have a light?" said Nick. "My brother lit his cigarette and as soon as I looked at my brother I got hit in the back of my head, knocked out. They started hitting me."
Nick says they also hit his friend.
"The next thing I knew I was waking up with blood in my eye and seeing a bunch of kids kick and beat me in the face," said Brandon.
Nick's teeth almost fell out. He says two were knocked in, one was knocked down and one was sheered off.
"I'm still in a lot of pain," said Nick. "My jaw hurts."
Brandon suffered a concussion and multiple stitches and staples. Having just gotten over a serious head injury in 2005, his family says he's lucky.
"They told us he couldn't survive another blow to the head," said Brandon's mother.
She says the most upsetting thing is that the five suspects are Marines.
"These are the people that are supposed to be protecting us," said Cindy Kaiser.
She says more needs to be done, and believes the men should be discharged.
Officials with Camp Lejeune, where the suspects were reportedly living, said "'In any case like this, the Marine Corps cooperates with the investigating agency and the case proceeds through the civilian legal system."
