BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Personnel changes have spiked in recent weeks at the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, according to records released to WECT late Friday under a public records request.
More than half of the 33 employment status changes in the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office this year have occurred since Aug. 5. Since that date, seven people have transferred, two people have been demoted, two deputies have been fired, three people have resigned and three people have been promoted.
"Changes are inevitable to keep our organization operating efficiently and effectively," Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said in an emailed statement Friday.
The changes include the terminations of two deputies, Nikkita Beresoff and Timothy Caulder. WECT reported earlier in the week how Beresoff was terminated on August 14th at the discretion of the sheriff, one day after authorities say her ex-husband publicly confronted her in a restaurant in Shallotte with lewd cell phone pictures. Caulder was charged on August 23rd with two counts of soliciting crimes against nature, two counts of soliciting prostitution and one count of willfully failing to discharge duties. According to arrest warrants, Caulder solicited the same woman on two separate occasions in August. Caulder was fired on the same day he was charged after a two week internal investigation.
In recent weeks, a spokesperson for the office denied any punishment for workers relating to rumors of inappropriate behavior.
"Brunswick County Sheriff's Office has been contacted by two separate media outlets within the past week stating that they have received information regarding 9-10 Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Deputies being involved in inappropriate texting/emailing within the past 30-60 days. No adverse personnel actions have been taken against any deputy for inappropriate texting/emails," Emily Flax, Public Information Officer for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, said.
WECT originally requested this information one week ago with the following language, "pursuant to NCGS153a-98 WECT is requesting a list of all Brunswick County Sheriff's employees that have received a demotion, transfer, suspension, separation or other change in position classification with that county from July 15th 2013 until Today."
The spokesperson originally sent WECT a list of three people who were disciplined – Beresoff, Caulder and Brian Medlin. Flax said she understood the original request to being related to "information on actions taken against any employees in regards to the ‘sexting' allegations which we addressed." Friday, the department released the additional information, showing the larger number of employee changes.
The records request does not include the termination of a sergeant at the Brunswick County Detention Facility that took place in early August. Henry Williams was charged with one count of simple assault after being accused of pushing an inmate to the ground while the prisoner was in leg restraints.
