WILMINGTON,NC (WECT)- Wilmington Housing Authority officials want to hit the streets to get a real look at the authority- owned property night scene, before finalizing any of the recently proposed resident rules.
The authority gathered resident surveys from the series of public input meetings offered over the summer. The meetings served as a Q&A session for residents, eager to learn about proposed new policies on authority owned properties you can read about the proposed changes here.
Among the survey responses from the meetings at Creekwood, Glover, Hillcrest, Houston Moore, Rankin Terrace, Solomon Towers and Vesta Village, the proposed changes regarding a non-smoking policy got the biggest reaction-- mainly because many residents see the idea as a danger.
While the surveys show there were numbers voting 'for' a non-smoking policy, official meeting notes show this proposed rule drew the most vocal attendee reaction:
"Making a designated smoking space can create a dangerous situation."
"If I can't smoke in my house or porch, let WHA pay my rent."
"In designated areas when smoking, you do not know what they are smoking because it is a common area and all walks of life will be in that area. They could be doing drugs, smoking crack and someone walks or drives by and starts shooting. There is no way they can get to safety in that split second."
No official decisions on proposed changes will be close to being finalized until October. Until then, the Wilmington Police Department and Wilmington Housing Authority officials will be doing some leg work to aid in the mission of making the properties safer.
"WPD officers are traveling to different authorities, including one in South Carolina, to see what they do to lower incident rates on properties. The plan is for officers to share ideas. I, along with some others will be doing random ride alongs with WPD officers. We want the process to be completely random so we can get a true visual of how things are on these properties," said WHA Board of Commissioners Chairman, Jeff Hovis.
